crazy?

I may sound a little crazy but that's ok. Or maybe I have been speaking nothing but baby talk for the past 9 months so I can totally understand when Eden says something. Don't burst my mommy bubble - I think she said her first word!

She normally says it right on the first try, but I think she was being a little silly for the camera so it took a few tries. It's no wonder this was her first word (mama doesn't count), she LOVES babies!!

Moving on... last night Eden gave us a pretty good scare. We were laying in bed when I just had this feeling that I should go check on her. I went in her room and she was sound asleep. Out of nowhere, she started screaming. Right away I knew something was wrong because she NEVER screams like that. I picked her up and she was limp and unresponsive. I knew she was breathing because she was crying, but her eyes were rolled back in her head and she wouldn't move a muscle. I ran in the kitchen and tried to hold her more upright but she was still limp and wouldn't respond to me gently shaking her or yelling her name. I took her to Craig and she finally 'woke up'. She just layed on Craig and stared at the ceiling with a blank stare for a minute. Then she snapped out of it and started to cry her normal soft cry. I gave her a bottle and she was back to her normal happy self but I was still freaking out. Craig checked her out and said she seemed fine so eventually we all settled in for the night.

I called her pediatrician today and they wanted to see her. The doctor believes that it was a breath holding spell where she cried so hard, held her breath and passed out. These are often mistaken for seizures, which is what I had originally thought it was. Breath holding spells can cause small, uneventful seizures.

So, we just have to wait to see if this happens again. If it happens again I will know to be a little more observant so we can make a decision of whether or not to test for seizure episodes. If it was in fact a seizure, 90% of kids go on to never have another seizure again.

She is totally fine today. She hasn't ran a fever or anything so we are pretty confident it wasn't a seizure. Hopefully she doesn't make a habit out of these breath holding spells either!

How could it have been a breath holding spell if she was asleep though? If she up and throwing a tantrum and freaking out it would make sense, but I don't understand how it could have happened when she was asleep. Is that when these breathing spells normally happen?

Hey Bethany, just wanted to let you know I experienced that with Braiden about a month ago. I was totally freaking out! I woke Josh and sid there's something wrong look at him! Josh called his Mom and I just held him in my rocking chair and rocked him and sang some primary songs to him and eventually woke up and looked at me and looked confused. I gave him a bottle and Josh came back in and said the same thing the doctor said. I talked to my Mom the next day to get her opinon and she said the same then i talked to his doctor and she said the same thing. But still to this day he hasn't had another incident like that. It was deffinately scary! I know how you feel! I think she'll be fine but keep a good eye on her. And her first word!!! How freakin CUTE!!! Braiden's first word was "Yeah" I don't know where he got it but he says it all the time. Glad she is okay!

oh and it wasn't that she was crying so hard she started holding her breath. Braiden does that but i hear him whenever he cries. Braiden's doctor said that sometimes babies in their sleep will have "dreams" of holding their breath and when they start to get their breath back it makes them cry because it scares them. It happens to babies mostly between ages 6 months to 18 months old. Listen to those feelings of the spirt telling you or as my mom calls them mommy senses. They are very important and we have them for a reason. Never ignore them.

that is so scary! I know I would freak out (call my dad, even in the middle of the night) and maybe consider calling 911. im a big worrier with my baby girl, as Im sure we all are, especially with our first kids. Im glad she's is doing well and am hoping that doesnt happen anymore.

Isn't it such a blessing to receive impressions to check on our children? I have had it many times. I am so glad you listened to that prompting and checked on her. Glad to know she is okay, that must have been scary though.
